We’re gearing up to dive into a review of Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island, and I had the chance to catch up with Alex Kanaris-Sotiriou, co-founder of Polygon Treehouse, to discuss the game’s development. Let’s explore what this new adventure brings!
PS4Blog: Morning, Alex! Great to have you back. How are things going on your end?
Alex Kanaris-Sotiriou: Thanks for having me! Things have been pretty hectic since our last indie project, Röki, hit the shelves. This time around, it’s been fascinating to reimagine Greek mythology in Mythwrecked. Instead of diving into Scandinavian folklore, we’re imagining what the gods might be like if they lived in today’s world. It’s been a rewarding shift in perspective.
PS4B: Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is launching on Nintendo Switch come December 5. What insights can you share about this fresh experience?
Alex: Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is what we like to call an ‘explore-o-story’ game. You play as Alex, a backpacker who’s trying to escape the hustle of modern life, only to have their vacation interrupted by a sudden, mysterious storm. This lands them on a forgotten island. The journey is all about making friends with the Greek gods, helping them recall their memories and figuring out a way back home.
PS4B: When did you begin working on this project and how has it evolved from its initial concept to the finished game?
Alex: We kicked off the initial stages of this project about three years ago. The core ideas, like the radar for treasure hunting and the memory flashbacks, have stayed consistent since those early days. What has evolved is the ‘Story Sandbox’—the way you have conversations with the gods and how these develop as you play. It went through several redesigns, and I believe the end result really draws players into the unfolding narrative.
PS4B: Röki was released as a physical edition—any chance we’ll get the same with Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island?
Alex: I love physical releases and was thrilled to see Röki in that format. As for Mythwrecked, there’s nothing to announce just yet. It’s certainly something I’d be excited to see happen down the line, but we’ll have to wait and see.
PS4B: Well, we have to wrap up now. Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Alex: Just a massive thank you for taking the time to read this! If you’re into cozy games, mythology, or adventure with a dash of mystery, we’d love for you to check out Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island. We believe it’s an indie adventure that’ll leave a lasting impression.
