As Black Friday rolls in, snagging a great deal on high-performance handheld gaming consoles has never been easier. This year, the AMD Z1 Extreme-powered devices are available at some jaw-dropping prices. Among these, the Lenovo Legion Go stands out with an impressive $227 discount, bringing its price down to just $472.97. That’s less than the cost of the Steam Deck OLED and significantly cheaper than others like the Asus ROG Ally X even during their sale markdowns.
Now, speaking of the Asus ROG Ally X, while it does offer slight performance upgrades over other Z1 Extreme models such as the Lenovo Legion Go and Asus ROG Ally, it doesn’t quite match up when you look at the bigger picture. The Legion Go, for example, boasts a spacious 8.8-inch display and detachable controllers reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch, setting it apart in the handheld gaming world.
At this price point, the Legion Go emerges as one of the top contenders among gaming PC handhelds. Yes, the Z1 Extreme/Ryzen 7840U/Ryzen 8840U devices need a strong power source or battery to outperform both the Steam Deck and its OLED counterpart. Still, having access to such robust performance is a real boon if you’re planning to enjoy some gaming at home as well.
While the deal on the Lenovo Legion Go is undeniably attractive, there are a couple of aspects worth considering. If you’re someone without a desktop setup and are looking to use an external GPU dock, you might find better compatibility in the Ally Extreme or Ally X models thanks to their superior external GPU support. Although the Legion Go offers dual USB4 ports, it doesn’t quite measure up to OCuLink or Asus’ proprietary eGPU connection, which might throttle the performance of more powerful GPUs.
Moreover, the device features an IPS screen instead of OLED. For many, this is more of a compromise than a drawback, as OLED isn’t universally adopted in handhelds yet. True, the Steam Deck OLED may offer better contrast, but at 8.8 inches, with a higher resolution and refresh rate (1080p at 144Hz) compared to the Deck OLED’s 7.4 inches (800p at 90Hz), the IPS display on the Legion Go still delivers a vivid and immersive gaming experience. It’s an ideal choice for those who prioritize screen size and quality.
