About a year back, I embarked on a journey writing episodes of 3rd Party 64, focusing on the various Army Men games released for the Nintendo 64. Coincidentally, around the same time, the Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) shared a Christmas-themed commercial for Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes, one of the titles I was delving into.
As luck would have it, this sparked a conversation with Frank Cifaldi, the director at VGHF, about a recent collection they’d received from Michael Mendheim, the creative mastermind behind the Sarge’s Heroes series. By the time our discussion wrapped up, my inbox was brimming with documents detailing the development of the Army Men series, expanding the scope of my project quite a bit. Fast forward to late summer 2024, and Frank extended an invitation for me to join him on an upcoming episode of The Video Game History Hour. We planned to chat with Mendheim himself about his games, promising even deeper insights.
In this installment of 3rd Party 64, you’ll find clips from that insightful interview, alongside research gathered from the documents shared by the Video Game History Foundation. Covering these games to such an extent wouldn’t have been feasible without the incredible work they do.
But that’s not all!
As I delved deeper, it quickly became apparent that I had unearthed far more intriguing facts about Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes than I could fit into a single video. So, we produced a second video showcasing what I considered to be the nine most fascinating, previously undocumented insights uncovered through this research. You can catch this video on The Video Game History Foundation’s YouTube channel.
