I’ve got a bit of a tumultuous relationship with Pokémon TCG Pocket. Let me tell you, it’s hands down the best mobile game I’ve come across this year. It’s like they’ve plucked the essence of the physical trading card game and seamlessly transformed it into an enchanting digital collect-a-thon. Yet, it’s also stirred emotions in me that I thought I had left behind in my early twenties. Picture this: an angrier version of myself, harboring a deep-seated frustration towards strangers from every corner of the world.
This game has me wide awake at 2AM more often than I’d like to admit, despite being at an age where such late nights feel less alluring. I go to bed irked, and wake up feeling the lingering annoyance. There I am, sipping my coffee on what should be a beautiful morning, yet my mind is tangled up in thoughts of Mewtwo EX decks and the players who seem to be riding on their coattails. But here’s the thing: that’s not an indication of a bad game at all. In fact, it only proves how fantastic it is because only a truly remarkable game can evoke such a strong emotional engagement.
A while back, we talked about how Pokémon TCG Pocket really needed a more competitive ranked match system, something that could let you challenge fellow trainers globally. Since then, the game has incorporated something that isn’t exactly what we asked for, yet it still managed to get those competitive urges stirring. Initially, they rolled out a simple PvP mode rewarding victories. Recently, they brought in a mode demanding consecutive wins, and that one really got its hooks in me.
This mode is ideal for showcasing the ebb and flow of the meta. It motivates the entire community to craft the ultimate deck until new cards shake things up. It’s almost like a tribute to the game’s 1.0 victors, if you will. You’ve got the relentless Charizard EX deck, the notorious Mewtwo EX deck, and the cunning Starmie/Articuno EX plus Misty deck. And just now, there’s a fresh PvP event accompanying the Mythical Island pack, meaning all these strategies, along with the Deck of the Month: Celebi EX, are back in the spotlight, ready to test our patience.
I must say, the developers genuinely merit their success. While the Pokémon brand certainly bolsters the game’s popularity, they’ve crafted an experience that’s captivating for players across all skill levels. They keep it fresh with playful events to maintain the intrigue of those with more niche interests. This balance, I believe, is the reason why so many players are still eagerly tearing open packs. It’s just that addictive.
With new cards about to hit the scene, I’m all in—no qualms about it. I gave the premium pass free trial a whirl when it first launched (kudos on that move), and I don’t foresee myself canceling that sub anytime soon. In my book, it’s money well spent. How else am I supposed to have the arsenal to topple top-tier decks in the pitch-black of early morning hours?
