The beloved VR combat simulation game, Blade & Sorcery, saw its big 1.0 release in June 2024, signaling the end of its development phase. However, the team behind it, Warpfrog, is not resting on its laurels. They have already set their sights on their next project, which promises to be just as customizable as the groundbreaking physics combat experience they offered fans with Blade & Sorcery.
While details about the new project are scarce, Warpfrog has confirmed to Road to VR that it will indeed be another VR title. This upcoming game will carry the signature features fans expect from Warpfrog, such as intricate physics-based interactions and a focus on immersive simulation. Moreover, they have assured that modding will be as integral as it was in Blade & Sorcery.
Blade & Sorcery is celebrated for its modding capabilities, which players can navigate manually or through the Nexus Mod Manager, allowing a wide range of user customizations—from adding a dramatic flourish to in-game weapon clashes to entirely new user-created maps and weapons.
In a conversation with Meta last October, Warpfrog disclosed that for their next game, they’re designing a brand-new framework. This change stems from the challenges they faced with the previous framework, which was pushed to its limits during Blade & Sorcery’s early-access period.
“We had to clean up some tangled code and take that as an opportunity to scale up,” they explained. “Essentially, we’re starting over with a new engine. This new framework should be faster and more efficient. Moreover, it’s being tailored for our growing team, marking a significant change since we’re now developing such a project together from beginning to end.”
It’s fair to say expectations are sky-high for Warpfrog’s future endeavors. What started as a solo pursuit by the developer known as ‘KospY’ has expanded into a robust team of nearly 30 members.
The June update, which included the new ‘Crystal Hunt’ story mode, transformed Blade & Sorcery from a purely melee combat sandbox into a fully-fledged adventure game. The update introduced players to complex upgrade systems and an expansive, interconnected world enriched by narrative.
Reflecting on the future, Warpfrog shared their excitement in a recent Steam update: “This is where the fun starts. The experience we’ve gained over the past five years has fueled our ambition. We’re eager to reveal what we’ve been crafting next, and it’s your support that enables us to pursue even more ambitious projects.”
