IO Interactive has proudly announced that their game, “Hitman: World of Assassination,” has reached an incredible milestone of 75 million players. This achievement not only marks a significant moment for the game but also suggests that it may be the most successful title the Danish studio has ever produced.
However, there’s a bit of a twist—it’s technically not just a single game. The “World of Assassination” actually bundles the latest three installments in the Hitman series into one seamless package. This collection was reintroduced for PC and consoles at the start of 2023 and made its debut on Meta Quest 3 in September 2024.
Back in January, IO Interactive shared this monumental news on Twitter, expressing how reaching the 75-million-player mark has solidified their business like never before. While specific contributing factors weren’t detailed, it stands to reason that Hitman 3 played a key role in this achievement given its stronger performance in markets like the UK compared to its precursor, which itself managed to cover its development costs more swiftly than the 2016 version.
The spike in player numbers can largely be credited to the offering on Xbox Game Pass, where it was available for two years until January 2024. The Free Starter Pack, available since 2021, and complimentary demos of the first two games in the trilogy have also significantly broadened the game’s reach.
Despite the widespread acclaim and continuing updates packed with content like Elusive Targets, the Hitman series is taking a bit of a break. IO Interactive is shifting its focus to two exciting new projects. One is “Project 007,” a James Bond-themed game in development since 2020, and the other is “Project Fantasy,” a novel venture aiming to expand IOI’s boundaries with a whimsical universe.
In this sprawling universe of Hitman, players get to immerse themselves in the role of Agent 47, embarking on thrilling missions across numerous intriguing locations. The game stands out for its creative approach, offering a rich variety of gear and strategies to tackle each complex, replayable mission. With its blend of rogue-like elements and strategic planning, Hitman: World of Assassination sets the stage for endless possibilities.
Additionally, the collection—spanning Hitman, Hitman 2, and Hitman 3—includes an engaging main campaign, contracts mode, escalations, and even featured live content. All these elements together create a dynamic and ever-evolving world that keeps players coming back for more.
