Celebrating Black Culture and Creativity in Gaming
As Black History Month unfolds, it’s a perfect opportunity to dive into the vast and vibrant expressions of Black culture, which span across continents and generations. Xbox is taking this moment to highlight the rich diversity in gaming influenced by Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latino, African, and African American traditions. This February, the focus is on the spectacular array of games shaped by Black creators and those led by Black protagonists, shining a spotlight on their compelling stories.
Black culture, with its resilience and creativity, isn’t monolithic; it’s made up of countless voices and stories that span worlds and weave through time. Xbox hopes to celebrate these different perspectives and the beauty of Black culture by backing emerging Black creators and the games that embody their visions. The next generation of Black creators are changing the gaming landscape by bringing fresh, dynamic narratives that resonate deeply with players. Xbox remains committed to these creators, ensuring their stories inspire globally.
Minecraft: Educating and Celebrating
In its ongoing homage to Black History Month, Minecraft is ramping up efforts to amplify Black voices and promote education on Black history. Through Minecraft’s platforms, they’re spotlighting Black creators in the marketplace and partnering with educators to share the stories of civil rights and community growth.
A significant feature is the "Lessons in Good Trouble," a Minecraft experience that’s been downloaded over 6 million times since 2020. This program, developed with education professionals Natasha Rachell and Felisa Ford, takes players on a journey through history, emphasizing figures like John Lewis and important movements for justice. This content is free on the Minecraft Marketplace and offers a deeper understanding of the power of standing up for what is right in your community.
Not only is Minecraft focused on education, but it’s also lifting up Black creators through partnerships, like that with The Cxmmunity Foundation, to bolster BIPOC in esports and gaming. This month, they’ll be showcasing these efforts on social media, driving attention to their transformative programs.
Explore the Southern Gothic Tale: "South of Midnight"
This month, we’re thrilled to unveil "South of Midnight," a new third-person action-adventure game steeped in the rich cultural lore of the American Deep South. As Hazel, a young woman with ancient weaving abilities, players will navigate a world enriched with myth and tradition. This game is a beautiful example of how gaming can celebrate and preserve Black culture and heritage, combining folklore with narrative complexity. Mark your calendars — "South of Midnight" lands on April 8, 2025, available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Steam, with first-day access through Game Pass.
Celebrating Black Creativity in Gaming
February isn’t the only time we should celebrate Black contributions to gaming — it’s a year-round celebration. Xbox and Game Pass offer a library of games that highlight Black characters and creators, offering diverse storylines and characters with a variety of skin tones and hairstyles.
For those looking for incredible stories, "Age of Empires III: The African Royals" takes you into the heart of African civilizations, while "Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn" and "Baldur’s Gate 3" offer epic narratives. In "Mortal Kombat 1," explore a reimagined universe, and "Streets of Rage 4" brings back classic beat ‘em up action. Games birthed from the imagination of Black creators include "Aerial_Knight’s We Never Yield" and "Jay & Silent Bob: Mall Brawl," among others.
A Spotlight on Rise of New Talent
One rising star to watch is Nicodemus Madehdou, the creative force behind JumpButton Studio in Philadelphia. Moving from Liberia in 2004, Nicodemus used games like RuneScape to build new connections in an unfamiliar world, fueling his passion for game design. JumpButton Studio, founded with partners Daniel Ostermiller and Calbert Warner, creates games that push for inclusion and cultural richness.
Nicodemus shares that resilience, community bonds, and learning from setbacks are key to thriving in gaming. His team is working on two exciting projects: "The Piece," a unique experience where graffiti comes alive, and "Our Passing Thoughts," a co-op adventure that delves into communication’s power. Expect these engaging titles to reach players who crave deep, collaborative gaming experiences.
Supporting Change and Creativity
Xbox Rewards members in the U.S. can also earn and donate points to support organizations like Gameheads and Cxmmunity, which aim to foster diversity in gaming. Players 18 and older can rack up points through gaming achievements and purchases, then use them to support great causes via the Rewards hub.
