Limited Run Games has exciting news for Gex fans: the beloved Gex Trilogy is set for re-release in Summer 2025 across a multitude of platforms. Initially launched on PlayStation and Nintendo 64, the Gex games have been quiet for too long, but now they’re poised for a significant comeback, courtesy of Limited Run Games.
Back in the mid-1990s, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix crafted the original Gex titles during the golden era of 3D platformers. The series features Gex, a wisecracking gecko who loves his 70s pop culture references. Armed with sarcasm, Gex forays into various TV worlds, hunting down remotes to defeat his adversary, Rez. Though Gex has a dedicated fanbase, it’s somewhat dwindled over the years due to a lack of ongoing support for the franchise, leaving some to dismiss our quirky gecko as a relic of the past.
Recently, Limited Run Games took to their YouTube channel to announce the Gex Trilogy’s Summer 2025 release. This marks the first major drop in the Gex series in years, following Square Enix’s move to secure the Gex trademark again in anticipation of this launch. Expect to see Gex making waves on platforms including the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. Plus, Limited Run Games will be managing the physical editions.
What Is Included in the Gex Trilogy?
The teaser video highlighted the addition of native widescreen support, a modern upgrade to the classics. The trilogy will feature the original trio of games: Gex, Gex: Enter the Gecko, and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. Each game brings its own unique style, shifting from 2D platforming in the first game to the 3D adventures in the sequels. Although details on further enhancements are scant, widescreen compatibility hints at some modernization for today’s gaming systems. Limited Run Games is no stranger to reviving classic collections, having plans for Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection this year.
Known for bringing old favorites back to life, as seen with the recent Virtua Fighter 2, Limited Run Games continues this trend with the much-anticipated Gex Trilogy. Fans are hopeful that this re-release will breathe new life into the franchise, perhaps leading to a future where Gex is a household name once more.
