The indie XR studio, The Binary Mill, has shared some exciting news for fans of space-themed adventures! Their much-talked-about game, “Into Black” (2024), is set to expand its reach beyond the Quest platform, making its debut on PSVR 2. Initially launched on Quest last October, this game invites players to dive into a universe filled with mining escapades reminiscent of Deep Rock Galactic, and it’s about to bring that thrill to a whole new audience.
For those unfamiliar, “Into Black” offers both single-player and a cooperative experience for up to four players, centered around scrounging for resources, upgrading equipment, and fixing your spacecraft. The adventure spans over 20 diverse levels, each situated in unique environments. As you venture through these settings, you’ll find yourself facing off against various adversaries while trying to collect the parts needed to escape an alien planet rich with peril.
With its launch on PSVR 2, the game introduces an intriguing feature: the ‘Singularity’ mode. This PvPvE mode pits you against up to 11 opponents in an online match that blends cooperation and competition. As the studio describes it, “Forge uneasy alliances as you navigate an ever-shrinking maze. Gather as much loot as you can, but get too greedy and you may not make it out at all.” It’s a mode that promises to introduce tension and strategy to the gameplay.
Moreover, the transition to PSVR 2 comes with some significant upgrades. The game will boast remastered environments and improved visual effects, including dynamic lighting and shadows, HDR, and eye-tracked foveated rendering. These enhancements are complemented by the PS Sense’s adaptive triggers and the headset’s rumble feature, providing a more immersive haptic experience.
One question that remains is whether there will be cross-play between PSVR 2 and Quest users. Unfortunately, it looks like that functionality won’t be available upon launch, though the studio might have more to share on that front in the future.
Despite the lack of a full trailer showing off these new features for PSVR 2, the studio has teased players with a handful of images and a couple of gifs to give a glimpse of what’s coming. As for the release date, it’s still under wraps, but The Binary Mill assures us that the wait won’t be long. Meanwhile, avid gamers can add “Into Black” to their wishlist on the PlayStation Store, readying themselves for its imminent arrival.
