As my colleagues are busy celebrating the excitement around today’s surprise stream and release of The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remake, there’s also something for those looking ahead: a nod from Todd Howard to remind us that The Elder Scrolls 6 is indeed still on the horizon! He didn’t hold back, mentioning that the team is actively working on it.
His exact words, shared just before unveiling a wealth of news and footage about the Oblivion Remaster, were: “obviously we’re working on the 6th chapter here.”
Now that’s quite the update! It’s the most substantial piece of information we’ve received about The Elder Scrolls 6 since March 2024, when Bethesda revealed that they had early versions of the game being tested. They even hinted that it was shaping up to be enjoyable, which is always a good sign.
Before this, our last interesting tidbit came from an ex-Skyrim designer. Back in October 2023, they advised us not to expect any updates until a mere six months before release. Just a month prior to that, Phil Spencer had speculated that The Elder Scrolls 6 might be about five years away from launch. At the time, this seemed a bit optimistic, but here we are, nearly two years later, still hunting for details.
In reality, official updates from Bethesda have been scarce for a while. In August 2023, they did confirm that development had started, which was roughly five years post the E3 announcement. It almost makes one wonder if announcing the game so early might have been jumping the gun a bit.
All humor aside, it is reassuring to catch a glimpse of progress on Elder Scrolls 6. It feels like ages since its announcement—I was still in school back then! Now, with adult responsibilities and dating apps, we find ourselves craving even a small tidbit, like concept art, to assure us the project is real. It’s like living a scene from Taken, where Liam Neeson had more proof his daughter was around than we do for this game.
