One of Avowed’s standout features is its dynamic combat system. Players can seamlessly alternate between different weapon types and switch between two preset loadouts, adding layers of strategy and excitement to every encounter. Furthermore, with the freedom to access and enhance any skill tree at any stage, players are encouraged to continually try out new tactics as they progress through the game.
Avowed welcomes a variety of gameplay styles, whether you prefer the rapid fire of dual pistols or the heft of a mighty hammer, each offering a unique and enjoyable experience. However, Avowed truly shines in its magic combat. Although initially reminiscent of fantasy RPGs like Skyrim, the game introduces its own unique twists that help it stand out.
A key difference between Avowed and the classic Skyrim magic is the inclusion of wand combat in Avowed. Wands in Avowed serve as one-handed ranged weapons, emitting a homing blast of energy. Importantly, attacks made with wands consume stamina rather than mana (Essence), allowing for uninterrupted attacks. While not extravagant, these wands pair exceptionally well with off-hand grimoires.
Avowed reimagines spellcasting with grimoires, where each comes pre-loaded with four distinct spells usable in and out of combat. Each spell consumes a specific amount of Essence and has its own cooldown, sharply contrasting with Skyrim’s system of equipping two spells at a time and sharing a Magicka pool.
Another compelling difference is Avowed’s streamlined approach to the spellcasting skill tree. Unlike Skyrim’s six distinct magic disciplines, each with their own skill tree, Avowed features a singular “Wizard” skill tree structured into five tiers, unlocked progressively as players level up. The Wizard tree is bifurcated into passive and active abilities, each upgradeable to enhance spell capabilities like duration.
While both Avowed and Skyrim offer flexible skill trees, they do so in unique ways. Skyrim demands linear progression within each tree, whereas Avowed lets players invest points into any ability as soon as they’ve unlocked the necessary tier level.
In a nod to flexibility akin to the Dragon Shouts found in Skyrim, Avowed introduces its “Godlike” abilities. These powers offer strategic advantages, like reviving fallen comrades or slamming foes with great force, available to any player irrespective of their class choice.
Avowed’s robust and adaptive combat system certainly presents a compelling draw for players who enjoy crafting their unique style and strategy.
