If you’re familiar with the British Isles like I am, Birmingham might not immediately strike you as the perfect setting for a video game. But what if we roll back the calendar to the 14th century and toss some zombies into the mix? Now we’re talking! That’s the intriguing concept behind “God Save Birmingham.” After catching about eight minutes of the latest gameplay footage, it’s now perched at the top of my list of most anticipated zombie games.
I generally lean towards zombie games that offer co-op play, teeming with dynamic hordes and over-the-top weaponry. Think Call of Duty Zombies or Dead Island 2—if you know, you know. Because of this preference, games like Killing Floor 3 and the mysteriously silent John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando have had my attention for upcoming PC titles. Yet, I must say, God Save Birmingham might just surpass them.
This isn’t your typical co-op shooter where you slap zombies around with electrified baseball bats or vacuum them up with a jet turbine. I’d seen snippets before, but IGN’s new extended trailer presents it much like The Last of Us, with third-person sneaking and intense takedown moves. While the narrative might not be as gripping, when it comes to dispatching the undead, it distinctly channels that TLOU feel.
The game also emphasizes reacting to and using your surroundings. You can move furniture to block entrances, transform ladders into bridges, and even use chairs to scale high ledges. Everything in this game, including the zombies, features realistic physics, creating a wonderfully interactive sandbox environment.
The latest trailer dives into the game’s rich survival mechanics. You’ve got to keep tabs on hunger, thirst, fatigue, and even panic levels. Replenishing these involves real-time actions—no pausing to munch on bread here. Take a tumble from a height? You’ll injure a leg and slow down. You can dismantle objects for materials, and there’s a full cooking system in play.
I’m genuinely impressed. The medieval setting offers a fresh twist for a zombie survival game. While “God Save Birmingham” doesn’t have a release date just yet, there’s talk of an early access launch.
