As Relentless as the Ocean
Before she became the fearsome Houndmaster, Portia Maye had a promising future. Growing up with her father’s love and the call of the sea guiding her spirit, there was a time when life seemed simple. However, all of that changed when the dreaded pirate Mad Molak attacked her father’s ship, Nightsdream, leaving devastation in his wake.
Portia survived the onslaught, spared to serve as a celestial navigator. Enveloped in shadows and driven by a burning desire for vengeance, she plotted a deadly course. Leading her captors into the deadly waters of Dragon’s Tooth, she ensured their demise. Incredibly, she alone emerged from the wreckage—until she stumbled upon her devoted puppy, Snug.
Portia stands out as the ultimate survivor, having endured not only the horrifying massacre but also the solitude of Dragon’s Tooth. Yet, revenge consumed her every thought, and her bloodlust only intensified with time.
Unbeknownst to her, Dragon’s Tooth was a Bleed—a surreal intersection of Realms. Imagine it like blending colors on a canvas, where two dimensions merge beautifully yet dangerously.
"There’s something about being in a Bleed," says Lead Narrative Director Jessi Thind. "It’s either gonna kill you or drive you mad."
Portia’s descent into madness mirrored her growing expertise in violence, eventually transforming her into a Killer even more ruthless than Molak himself. By the time she achieved her vengeance, she was fully ensnared in The Entity’s clutches.
Her only remaining shred of humanity was linked to Snug, her loyal and protective ally. This connection is reflected in The Houndmaster’s Power, harnessing Snug’s instincts to track and capture other Survivors.
An Oath to the Black Talon
Taurie Cain is another fascinating addition to the roster, emerging as a determined member of the Black Talon, a faction of the sinister Black Vale. She was driven by her quest to uncover the mysteries of The Entity, an obsession sparked when her parents disappeared into a Bleed in pursuit of their research. Taurie bravely ventured in after them, narrowly escaping the worst consequences.
From then on, she swore her allegiance to her dark mission, climbing the Black Talon’s ranks with unrelenting zeal. Unlike other Survivors who have tangled with the Black Vale, Taurie actively sought the darkness, convinced that The Entity was the key to surpassing the mortal coil.
"Growing up with the Black Talon instilled in her a belief that she was working towards the greater good," explains Thind. "But as she delved deeper, the darkness began to envelop her, leading to a pivotal decision she couldn’t reverse."
Taurie faced a life-defining moment when tasked with eliminating Jordan Rois, stepbrother to Survivor Haddie Kaur and a key adversary. With knife poised to strike, Taurie hesitated, marking one of her last moments before entering The Fog.
In the depths of this new, foreboding world, she learned that all she believed was real. Yet, the joy of discovery turned to horror upon realizing her loyalty led to a relentless cycle of pain. Nonetheless, Taurie’s resolve remained unbroken, sure that her destiny was yet to unfold.
"Her dedication to the Vale might be an asset in The Fog,” says Thind, "as she believes everything is part of a grand plan. Taurie’s journey isn’t over until The Entity acknowledges her power, perhaps even as a Killer."
Her arrival in The Fog presents an intriguing puzzle—why as a Survivor?
“The Entity feeds on strong emotions,” Thind explains. “It likely saw potential in someone who doesn’t easily align with others, exploiting her inner conflicts and isolation.”
Her abilities emphasize independence, quickly severing ties with teammates to attract the Killer’s focus, all while harnessing adversity to her benefit.
It’s fascinating to ponder that, under different circumstances, Portia and Taurie’s roles within The Entity’s realm might have been reversed. But once destiny is set in motion, it begrudges deviation—especially when that path is enshrouded in The Fog…
