Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has announced that the demand for pre-orders of the Nintendo Switch 2 via the My Nintendo Store cannot be met.
Faced with overwhelming interest, the company initiated a lottery system for pre-order opportunities, gathering over 2.2 million applications in Japan alone—far beyond initial expectations. This unexpected surge means that the My Nintendo Store’s supply won’t satisfy everyone eager to secure the new portable home console.
In a statement shared on X, translated by BlackKite, Furukawa explained, “We’ve been gearing up for the production of the Nintendo Switch 2 by acquiring substantial components ahead of time. After revealing details on April 2 and opening up the lottery on My Nintendo Store, interest skyrocketed with about 2.2 million applications just in Japan.”
He continued, highlighting the imbalance between demand and supply: “The number of consoles available for release on June 5 falls short, leaving many hopeful customers likely to miss out when results are revealed on April 24.”
However, there is a flicker of hope. “For those not selected in the first lottery, they’ll automatically be entered into the second round, sparing them from reapplying. Yet, even with this effort, stock remains insufficient. Despite our preparations, meeting everyone’s expectations is a challenge, and for that, we sincerely apologize.”
Furukawa assured customers they’re taking steps to address the situation, “We’re enhancing production capabilities and collaborating with physical and online stores across Japan, which will also start taking pre-orders or organizing their own lottery sales from April 24. Please refer to individual store guidelines for specifics.”
The My Nintendo Store will persist with sales post-launch, with further details forthcoming. Furukawa reaffirmed the commitment to ramping up production, aiming to deliver the Nintendo Switch 2 to as many enthusiasts as possible. “We appreciate your patience and understanding as we strive to fulfill everyone’s expectations,” he added.
Mark your calendars for June 5, 2025, when the Nintendo Switch 2 hits retailers globally. It’s priced at £395.99 in the UK, €469.99 across Europe, and $449.99 in the U.S.
