To mark the launch of the Lunar Remastered Collection, now out on Xbox One and compatible with Xbox Series X|S, I had the chance to chat with Amy Nguyen, the Senior Graphic Designer at GungHo America. We delved into what inspired the new logo and the journey from concept to the final design.
Hi Amy! Can you share a bit about your background in design and some key projects you’ve worked on at GungHo?
Hey there! I’ve been lucky enough to work on a variety of projects, from designing assets for major tournaments to collaborations with famous IPs. My first big role as creative lead came with the console port of Grandia in 2024.
What was your reaction when you were first approached to create the logo for this remaster?
I was thrilled but also a little apprehensive. The Lunar logo is a significant piece of the game’s brand identity. My process began with several variations until we found the right fit, going back and forth on feedback to refine the design.
Did the original logos influence the design of the new one? How did you approach creating this version?
Absolutely, I did a lot of initial research. As a remaster, it was important that our logo resonated with the brand’s legacy. I started brainstorming and sketching numerous ideas. In the end, we kept the iconic red with a new gold sheen to reflect that remastered touch.
The logo underwent multiple iterations. Where did you draw inspiration for each version?
My focus was to maintain the core shape and color of the classic "Lunar" text while signaling the remaster. We tested different directions, tweaking colors and accents—like the dragon sword and ribbon from previous versions—and playing with shapes. Ultimately, we fused elements we liked from various versions.
Can you tell us about any special details in the final logo design?
I’m quite fond of how the ‘R’ in "Remastered" extends, echoing back to the original design. I also played with the serifs in several letters to maintain a cohesive and interesting shape.
What was it like collaborating with original artist Toshiyuki Kubooka for the packaging’s key visuals?
The detail Mr. Kubooka brought to the visuals blew me away. It was refreshing to see a darker background paired with collaged elements. The front packaging came together naturally as his key visual fit the cover beautifully, with only minor adjustments needed.
The back cover seems to have a different feel. How did you approach its design?
I wanted to capture some of that nostalgia with the pixel sprites on the back, paired with game screenshots. It was key to keep the gold and font style from the “Remastered” logo to ensure brand consistency. Some elements distinguish the games while blending them as a cohesive collection.
What’s your favorite part of the package design?
Honestly, working alongside Mr. Kubooka and collaborating with the entire team was truly rewarding. The package design reflects the collective effort of everyone involved, from marketing to development. I’m thrilled to see our hard work pay off!
