The voice actors behind the French version of Apex Legends have recently made headlines for refusing to sign a contract that would allow their voices to be used for AI training.
Pascale Chemin, known for her role as Wraith in the French version of the popular game, shared the news on Twitter. She revealed that the publisher—likely Electronic Arts—wanted to include a clause in the actors’ agreements allowing their recorded voices to train AI models. Though neither the game nor the publisher was explicitly named, all signs suggest it involves Apex Legends and EA.
In addition to Chemin, 31 other voice actors involved in the project have also reportedly declined to agree to these terms. They collectively penned a letter to the publisher, firmly standing their ground.
Chemin emphasized the importance of their unity, stating, “We must stand together to ensure a clause protecting our voices is included in our contracts. This isn’t just for us working here; it’s crucial for every video game dubbing studio. If we don’t act now, we might never have this protection, and that could lead to big troubles.”
She further explained, “It might seem counterintuitive to refuse work at this time, especially when many of us are finding it hard to get jobs and are financially struggling. A paycheck would be helpful, no doubt. However, it’s not just work we’re being asked to commit to—it’s about handing over our skills to train AI that could eventually take our jobs away. They’re asking us to sign away what we’ve been fighting against. It’s like they’re expecting us to willingly undermine our own futures and endorse AI advancements.”
