Sony Interactive Entertainment finds itself in an interesting situation with its push into multiplayer live-service games. The PS5 launched the highly successful Helldivers 2, but the excitement was dampened by Concord’s disappointing performance. Despite these challenges, Sony seems committed to making its mark in the live-service arena. This determination is evident from a recent job posting.
A job posting from PlayStation Studios hints at their newest project: a cooperative game with AAA ambitions. Recently spotted by Tech4Gamers, this post for a Game Systems Designer at their new Los Angeles studio mentions ambitions for a groundbreaking original IP. Although similar ambitions were noted in previous listings, this one gives more hints about the nature of the project.
In the post, under qualifications, one particular requirement stands out: “Experience with and knowledge of cooperative multiplayer design principles and ideals.” This suggests that the LA-based studio is crafting a co-op multiplayer game designed to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with PlayStation’s iconic franchises. Beyond this tantalizing snippet, the project remains shrouded in mystery.
Back in January, the internet buzzed over a job ad that hinted at a new PlayStation studio. Rumor has it that Jason Blundell, a former Call of Duty developer, is leading the charge after Deviation Games shut its doors in 2023. After the closure, some of Blundell’s former team members confirmed their move to PlayStation.
There has been more movement behind the scenes at Sony. Reports suggest that the troubled launch of Concord has prompted a major shift in Sony’s live-service strategy. According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, Sony is taking a hard look at its live-service plans. This reassessment has led to the cancellation of several projects, including a God of War multiplayer game from Bluepoint Games.
