Rec Room is buzzing with fresh, first-party adventures that you can dive into either with pals or with random players. The latest big hit on this social VR playground is ‘Run the Block,’ a game that draws clear inspiration from the beloved Dreamcast classic, Jet Set Radio, which wowed us back in 2000.
‘Run the Block’ burst onto the scene on December 11th and has already captured the attention of over a million gamers. Much like Jet Set Radio, this free-to-play mini-game offers an exciting showdown where you’re up against up to nine competitors. You’ll dance through the streets with your parkour skills in an urban jungle, leaving your mark in the form of vibrant graffiti tags throughout the cityscape.
Even though you won’t find those iconic aggressive rollerblades from the 2000s, you’ll still be sprinting, jumping, and performing stylish grinds along massive lines that stretch across the map. It’s a thrilling race through an urban maze!
Looking back at the year, Rec Room hasn’t been overly abundant with first-party games. But the notably popular entry we did see was ‘My Little Monster,’ a charming pet farming simulation. This year, Rec Room also focused on injecting the game with branded content—think avatar packs from the ‘Monster High’ collection and gear from Bungie’s famed shooter, Destiny.
Perhaps most exciting is their push to expand the creator suite. This upgrade empowers users to craft detailed worlds and design their own game assets, which they can now trade within the vibrant creator economy. On top of that, earlier in the year, they debuted full-body avatars, giving players even more ways to express themselves.
November marked a milestone too, with Rec Room becoming available on Nintendo Switch. Now, it’s more accessible than ever on a wide array of devices, from PC VR to all Quest headsets, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, and even Xbox and PlayStation.
