Indie publisher Reforged Studios has recently added another layer to its development portfolio by acquiring Yellow Lab Games. While the financial details of this acquisition haven’t been disclosed, it’s confirmed that Yellow Lab will maintain its independence, according to GI.biz. Excitingly, their in-progress roguelite RPG, Metavoidal, is slated for a release on Steam in the first quarter of 2025.
This move follows closely on the heels of Reforged’s acquisition of Ground Shatter and Extra Mile Studios back in August, marking a notable year of expansion for the company.
“Growing up in South Africa, I have always been attuned to the remarkable game development talent in the country,” said Reforged’s CEO and founder Peter Van Der Watt. “Yellow Lab Games had caught my attention some time ago, especially after witnessing the positive buzz surrounding Metavoidal, which marks their debut in PC and console gaming.”
Van Der Watt continued, “Since I moved to Scotland in 2011 to start my first game studio, I’ve been a strong advocate for South African game development on the global stage. Today, everyone on Reforged’s board shares my enthusiasm for the potential in this region. When the chance came up to bring [Yellow Lab’s head of studios] David Hecker and his team into our fold, we jumped at it. We’re thrilled to welcome South Africa’s premier gaming talent to the Reforged family, and we fully anticipate that this is just the beginning of a broader commitment to Africa’s growing gaming industry.”
