Showtime is diving back into the world of Dexter with a fresh take—a prequel series called Original Sin. And guess what? The first sneak peek is finally out, stirring up quite the buzz.
Though Dexter wrapped up over ten years ago, we find ourselves in an era where reviving old favorites and big-name franchises is all the rage. After serving up Dexter: New Blood back in 2022, which revisited Dexter’s story a decade after the original series, Paramount and Showtime have now dropped the first trailer for this prequel, Dexter: Original Sin. Before you hit play or read on, here’s a heads-up—this comes with spoilers, especially if you haven’t seen New Blood. Just a friendly warning!
The trailer kicks things off with some intense flashbacks—right to the gripping finale of New Blood, where we see Dexter sprawled in the snow, blood oozing after his son, Harrison, shot him. As he’s whisked away to the hospital, his past comes rushing back, setting the stage for Original Sin. The official scoop? “Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin charts Dexter’s journey from a regular student to a justice-seeking serial killer,” the plot summary reveals. “When Dexter can no longer suppress his dark urges, he must figure out how to harness them.”
And guiding him through this dark dance is his father, Harry—played by Christian Slater. Harry instills in Dexter a Code, aimed at targeting those who, in Dexter’s eyes, deserve to be wiped off the map, all while slipping under the police radar. This dual life gets even more complicated as young Dexter kicks off a forensics internship with the Miami Metro Police Department.
Making a return is Michael C. Hall, lending his voice to Dexter’s thoughts. Plus, Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy fame is set to make a cameo. Since it’s a prequel, we kind of know Dexter’s fate is sealed, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be an exciting ride.
Interestingly, this series might even shed light on Dexter’s fate post-New Blood. With another show, Resurrection, on the horizon, it wouldn’t be too shocking if things end with Dexter coming back to life. But, for all of that, you’ll have to hang tight until December 13, when Dexter: Original Sin drops on Paramount+.
