Word on the street is that Ubisoft, the notable French publisher, has embarked on developing a new battle royale game aimed directly at taking on the might of Apex Legends.
The scoop from Insider Gaming reveals that this venture, known internally as “Scout,” once even used artwork that strikingly resembled that of Respawn Entertainment and EA’s successful title. Sources also whisper about characters that bear a close resemblance to those found in Apex Legends. This isn’t just a fresh idea either; development has been underway for a good while now.
It seems Ubisoft might be aiming to lure players away from Apex Legends, which has been experiencing a dip in player numbers and revenue, as confirmed by Electronic Arts. A source shared, “Their strategy appears to be about stepping into the gap left by Apex’s declining player base, with Ubisoft’s bosses thinking there’s potential for another hero-centric battle royale in the market.”
Ubisoft isn’t new to the free-to-play battle royale scene. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, though it unfortunately only lasted for 18 months. This recent news follows closely behind Ubisoft deciding to shelve XDefiant, another free-to-play shooter, by the end of 2024.
Interestingly, Apex Legends isn’t staying still either. There’s a plan for an upgraded version, Apex Legends 2.0, expected to hit the shelves sometime post-April 2026.
