Square Enix seems poised to announce some exciting news soon, at least if the latest buzz is anything to go by. Rumor has it that Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth might be making their way to the Nintendo Switch 2, the much-anticipated follow-up to the original portable console.
As we look forward to the Xbox Developer_Direct scheduled for Thursday, January 23rd, there’s been quite a bit of speculation surrounding potential third-party revelations. Notable insider NateDrake recently suggested that we might see a surprise release of Final Fantasy 16. During his segment on the Nate the Hate Podcast (check out around 18 minutes and 12 seconds), he seemed pretty confident about this scoop.
Kicking off with some exciting news, NateDrake said, “The game that’s going to be announced finally is Final Fantasy 16. Yep, it’s happening on the Xbox platform, and it might come with a twist like Death Stranding did…I’m talking about a shadow drop. Imagine playing it right after the presentation, complete with expansions, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll see a nice discount too.”
He didn’t stop there, though. Expanding on what might be in store for Nintendo Switch 2, NateDrake added, “But here’s where it gets even more interesting… Post-announcement of Final Fantasy 16, it seems Square Enix could very well confirm Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for Xbox too.”
To be clear, NateDrake is speculating that this big reveal could take place at the Xbox Developer_Direct. He’s certain, however, that these much-loved titles will hit Xbox, with Final Fantasy 7 Remake slated for a 2025 release and Rebirth following in 2026. And yes, both of these games are expected on the Nintendo Switch 2 as well.
In a conversation with GamesRadar, Naoki Hamaguchi, who’s directing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, mentioned his ambition to allow “as many players out there as possible” to dive into the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series. Hamaguchi shared, “While we can’t say much about Final Fantasy 7 right now, I definitely want to make the series accessible to a broader audience. Our aim is to create opportunities where more players can jump in and enjoy these games moving forward.”
Yet, despite the swirling rumors, the only official word we have from Nintendo is their promise of unveiling the next-gen console by March 2025. They’ve assured fans that the new device will retain backward compatibility with the existing Switch.
The curtain is expected to rise on the Nintendo Switch 2 by the end of March 2025, with a global launch anticipated later that year. Stay tuned for what could be a thrilling year in gaming!
