Get ready for an exciting update in the tech world! Rumor has it that the next HDMI standard, possibly HDMI 2.2, is set to make its big debut at CES 2025, right alongside the latest generation of gaming GPUs.
CES is always a hotbed for cutting-edge technology, and this time it’ll be no different with the introduction of a new HDMI standard set to outshine the current HDMI 2.1 ports. According to ComputerBase, the HDMI Licensing Administrator is gearing up to present what they’re calling a “breakthrough” in technology. While they haven’t explicitly named this new standard HDMI 2.2, all signs point to its unveiling. This new standard is expected to bring about significant improvements in bandwidth, resolution support, and refresh rates.
The HDMI Forum is said to announce a fresh version of the HDMI spec. This latest spec will utilize next-gen HDMI tech to accommodate a wide range of higher resolutions and refresh rates according to the new HDMI cable support. Higher quality content options are assured for television, film, and gaming studios, offering more distribution platforms.

Now, the statement from HDMI LA didn’t directly reference the new HDMI by name, but from past patterns, it’s unlikely that we’re just looking at a revision of HDMI 2.1.
As for the specifics of HDMI 2.2, we’re still in the dark. The current HDMI 2.1 supports a bandwidth of up to 48 Gbps and resolutions reaching 10,240 × 4,320 pixels, so HDMI 2.2 should, theoretically, surpass these benchmarks.
Interestingly, no GPU makers have yet acknowledged plans to integrate HDMI 2.2 in their next-gen products. The only notable update in this space has been with DisplayPort 2.1, featured in AMD’s RDNA 3 GPUs and rumored to be included in NVIDIA’s upcoming “RTX 5000” Blackwell GPUs. Should HDMI 2.2 make an official entrance, we might see it supported by the next wave of GPUs. However, we’ll have to wait for more concrete details before making any assumptions.
