Marvel Rivals has managed to remain in the spotlight since its launch last December, yet NetEase, the developer, isn’t just sitting back and relaxing. Hot off the press is the announcement of Marvel Rivals Season 2: Hellfire Gala. According to the latest Dev Diary, players can expect a variety of new features designed to keep the gameplay exciting, like new team-up abilities and a fresh hero joining the lineup every month, starting with Season 3.
To ignite the anticipation, a cinematic trailer for Marvel Rivals Season 2 has dropped, showcasing the Hellfire Gala theme vividly. This season sees Marvel characters coming together to celebrate Mutant culture on Krakoa, teasing a collection of new battle pass skins, with Emma Frost and Ultron ready to step in as new playable characters. But there’s a juicy tidbit quietly slipped into the trailer that hints at significant twists in the Marvel Rivals’ storyline going forward.
The Marvel Rivals Season 2 Trailer Could Be Teasing a Doom and Loki Team-Up
In one of the key moments from the Season 2 trailer, just before Ultron crashes the extravagant gala, there’s a revealing sweep across the scene’s attendees. Front and center, we see Magneto in his House of M-inspired outfit alongside his daughter, Scarlet Witch, and a casually propped up Wolverine in his undercover Patch getup.
On the far side of the frame, Loki, decked out in his Presidential Attire, is striking up a conversation with a shadowy figure whose back faces the camera. This intimidating presence is none other than Doom 2099, one half of the season’s main villainous tag team.
What This Tease Could Mean for Marvel Rivals’ Future
Delving into what this mysterious exchange means requires a check-in on Marvel Rivals’ narrative arc thus far. The saga began when Doom and his futuristic counterpart started meddling with the fabric of time and space, causing timelines to warp and intertwine, resulting in the Timestream Entanglement—a cataclysm where dimensions overlap.
In one of these tangled realms, the godly Odin enters his deep sleep phase, Odinsleep, leaving Loki the perfect opportunity to grasp control from his brother. Teaming up with Hela, Loki banishes Thor into an alternate dimension, claiming the throne on Yggsgard. He also makes a fascinating discovery: the Yggdrasil tree sap has absorbed Chronovium during the temporal chaos, allowing Loki to peer into the future.
During Marvel Rivals Season 1, we see Doom handing the Chronovium over to Dracula, who then uses it along with the Darkhold to momentarily seize control of New York. Judging by the hints in the trailer, Season 2’s plot will revolve around Ultron’s ambition to birth his “Age of Ultron,” aiming to eradicate both humans and mutants to replace them with his AI ilk. It’s plausible that one of the Dooms is covertly backing Ultron’s endeavor, exploiting it as a smokescreen to further his dominion over the Timestream Entanglement.
Loki might also be on track to become the next of Doom’s unwitting puppets. The trailer leaves little doubt that their Hellfire Gala conversation will spiral into a future season where Loki might unleash newly acquired powers, causing havoc across Yggsgard. This unfolding story arc would also be the perfect opportunity to introduce Valkyrie and Angela—characters rumored to make their entrance in Marvel Rivals soon.
In response to Marvel Rivals’ decision to condense its seasons to two months from three, it’s no surprise that NetEase is dropping these breadcrumbs of future plot developments, given how swiftly new seasons will be rolling out.
