Sony has officially addressed the lawsuit brought forward by Christopher Barrett, a former Bungie employee.
In documents submitted to the court, as highlighted by Game File, Sony—owner of PlayStation—has shared text message exchanges between Barrett and female colleagues at Bungie. According to Sony, these messages demonstrate “a pattern of misconduct” on Barrett’s part.
Barrett parted ways with Bungie in March 2024, but it later emerged that his exit was linked to accusations of inappropriate behavior towards female team members within the company. In response, Barrett has taken legal action against Sony, seeking $200 million in damages for wrongful dismissal. He argues that his forced departure cost him $45 million, which he was supposed to receive from Sony’s acquisition of Bungie in 2022.
In its defense, Sony reiterates that Barrett was dismissed due to allegedly pursuing a “lower-level, female employee.” Although not working directly with her, he reportedly started with a friendly chat, later crossing professional boundaries by commenting on her looks and showing an unwelcome romantic interest. Barrett is accused of trying to establish an unprofessional closeness with these colleagues.
The company’s legal documents include excerpts from messages and direct communications Barrett allegedly sent to his victims.
Barrett’s legal team fired back, telling Game File, “Sony is selectively presenting text messages and alleged discussions, making baseless claims to tarnish Christopher’s reputation and justify his dismissal, thus avoiding his contractual entitlements.”
They criticized Sony for not providing the complete context, adding, “There is no substantial legal or factual underpinning in Sony’s response to justifiably terminate Christopher.” They expressed confidence that with all evidence on the table, “it will become apparent that Sony orchestrated a plan to deprive him of his position and the equity awards accrued from his 25 years of dedicated service.”
