In an exciting move for VR enthusiasts, Sony has announced a permanent price drop on the PSVR 2, bringing the cost down to $400 beginning next month. This marks a significant decrease from its original launch price of $550 nearly two years ago.
Despite the PSVR 2’s quiet second anniversary and no buzz during Sony’s recent State of Play, the price cut to $400 or €450 or £400 or Â¥66,980 will take effect in March. What makes this even more intriguing is that this new lower price applies to both the basic PSVR bundle—with the headset, two Sense controllers, and headphones—and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle, initially priced at $600 when introduced in February 2023.
Sony has occasionally offered even steeper discounts, with last November’s sale bringing the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle down to just $350. This latest price adjustment might suggest more savings opportunities could lie ahead.
The price reduction comes as Sony promotes some exciting PSVR 2 content, such as Skydance’s Behemoth, Metro Awakening VR, and Alien: Rogue Incursion. Future releases, including Aces of Thunder, Dreams of Another, Hitman World of Assassination, and The Midnight Walk, also show promise. However, Sony hasn’t yet fully committed to expanding its PSVR 2 offerings to the same extent seen with its original PSVR lineup.
In terms of exclusive releases, Sony has put out only a few first-party games for the PSVR 2 like Horizon Call of the Mountain, along with VR modes for Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil Village, and the Resident Evil 4 Remake. This is a marked difference from the original PSVR, which boasted titles such as Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Blood & Truth, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, PlayStation VR Worlds, VR Playroom, and modes for Gran Turismo Sport and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
To its credit, Sony did a favor to PSVR 2 users last August by introducing a $60 PC Adapter. This adapter lets users connect to a VR-ready PC and dive into SteamVR games like Half-Life: Alyx and Fallout 4 VR. However, the move hints at Sony’s gradual separation of PSVR 2 from the PS5 ecosystem.
As we look towards the future, further discounts could spark increased sales, drawing in more PS5 players eager to explore both the existing library and a constant flow of third-party games. If Sony repeats the 42% discount seen on Black Friday, the PSVR 2’s price could drop to just $232, quite the tempting price point for gifts or anyone wanting to try VR without breaking the bank.
Updates: On February 27, 2025, the Euro price was corrected to €450, having been initially mistakenly reported as €550.
