Soul Paint offers a virtual reality journey that blends 3D drawing with personal reflection. It debuted at SXSW 2024 and is the brainchild of Sarah Ticho and Niki Smit, with narration by Rosario Dawson. This VR experience allows you to “discover, meet, and choreograph your own emotions” using immersive technology. Stepping into an ethereal space as a 3D avatar, you have the opportunity to paint across this virtual expanse and onto your digital self.
Using a combination of body-mapping techniques and virtual reality, Soul Paint provides a unique way to explore and become more aware of your emotions. The creators explain that it’s designed to “foster empathy and social connectedness by witnessing the experiences of others.” At the end, you can choose to share your emotional journey with others.
I had the chance to experience it firsthand during the NewImages Festival 2025 at the XR Market. The 20-minute session opens with a profound question: “Where are you feeling?” Initially unsure, I soon found the experience to take on a spiritual dimension. This serene realm encourages self-expression in every gesture.
What unfolded was calming and introspective, almost like achieving self-awareness. While I’m certainly not an artist, my attempts at drawing felt meaningful in the moment. You’re also invited to sketch on your virtual body and leave a voice note, offering a touching method of sharing sentiments when words fall short.
Soul Paint aims to hold a mirror to our inner selves within VR. Although it’s a transient linear experience, it possesses a strong sense of presence and player choice that I found appealing. While not deep in complexity, its thoughtful, meditative qualities are deeply engaging. I look forward to seeing more experiences like this.
As of now, it is uncertain if Soul Paint will be available for home use, but we’ll keep our readers updated with any new information.
