The next installment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series is moving along smoothly, according to updates from Square Enix. The development phase hasn’t faced any major hurdles so far. While there’s no specific release date pinned down yet, if we look at Square Enix’s history with these projects, it seems likely the final chapter in the FF7 remake series might be available as early as 2027.
In a recent statement, a high-ranking official from Square Enix expressed the company’s satisfaction with how the third game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy is shaping up. This was part of a broader update concerning the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth sequel.
The groundwork for this final chapter began around June 2022, with the project moving into full production just after the launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in February 2024. Since then, Square Enix has been sharing occasional updates to keep fans in the loop on the progress of this major RPG project.
Continuing this line of communication, Yoshinori Kitase and Naoki Hamaguchi, the series producer and game director respectively, recently gave an interview to the Japanese publication Famitsu. During their chat, Hamaguchi shared his optimism about the production, noting that it’s going “very well.” He added that the team hasn’t faced any significant delays thus far, though he isn’t ready to announce when gamers can expect to see the finished product.
In the same interview, Kitase mentioned that the storyline for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 was wrapped up in 2024. Hamaguchi had already hinted at this back in November 2024, when he mentioned that they had solidified their vision for the upcoming RPG. Reflecting on the final narrative, Kitase expressed his satisfaction with how it all came together and predicted that fans will be pleased with the outcome, although he didn’t give away any plot details.
The previous installment in the series, the original Final Fantasy 7 Remake, took about five years to develop. However, Square Enix was able to complete Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in a somewhat faster timeline of about four years. The ability to reuse assets from the original remake likely contributed significantly to this quicker turnaround. This pace could have been even faster if not for the challenges presented by the global pandemic in 2020, which caused numerous delays.
As for the third game in the trilogy, it’s conceivable that it will make its debut by 2027. Similar to its predecessors, the game may initially be exclusive to the PlayStation before rolling out to PC and possibly other platforms. Notably, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth expanded its reach today, January 23, when it became available on PC, adding another dimension to its availability.
