The team behind Gorilla Tag, Another Axiom, has just rolled out a major update for Orion Drift, freshening up the space station setting with a new game mode called ‘Capture the Beacon’ (CTB).
Drawing from the classic capture the flag, CTB shakes things up by inviting players to transport a rod-shaped beacon back to their base. The intriguing twist here is that there are no restrictions on the number of players or any time limits—anyone can join the fray whenever they want.
While the studio has hinted at “a ton more” coming with this update, they’re keeping the details under wraps for now. We should get the full scoop when the update launches tomorrow, March 28th, at 10 AM PT.
Orion Drift first made its appearance on Quest in late February, available for free in early access. It uses the same movement mechanics as Gorilla Tag, allowing players to navigate the expansive space station by physically swinging their arms to move forward.
Beyond the new CTB mode, players can already dive into various activities, prominently featuring ‘Drift Ball.’ This game is akin to a low-gravity version of handball and serves as a modern nod to the now-retired sports game Echo VR.
Spanning across different zones in the space station, there are also other mini-games to explore. These include a parkour challenge inspired by Gorilla Tag’s climbing mechanics, arenas for perfecting those Drift Ball skills, as well as golf and basketball activities. Players can also relax in the lounge areas, enjoying ongoing matches from multiple arenas.
Currently, the game supports up to 75 players per server. However, Another Axiom has ambitious plans to boost this number to 200 players in the future. Expanding the variety of mini-games certainly seems like a step towards this goal, even though Orion Drift is still in its early stages.
Despite following in the footsteps of Gorilla Tag by offering engaging, drop-in social experiences, Orion Drift hasn’t quite achieved the viral fame of its predecessor. So far, it’s amassed around 3,300 user reviews and hasn’t yet cracked the top 50 best-selling Quest games. Leading the pack currently are Animal Company, Yeeps, and Gorilla Tag.
