Nightdive Studios is gearing up to release System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Edition on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch on June 26. This announcement was made during the Future Game Show Spring Showcase. Breathing new life into the classic 1999 sci-fi horror game, this edition marks the first time System Shock’s iconic series will be available on consoles.
While it may not be as extensive a redo as the outstanding 2023 System Shock, this edition still packs a punch with a major graphics upgrade, including updated textures and support for ultrawide screens. Fans can also look forward to new audio recordings and numerous quality-of-life improvements, all aimed at making the game more appealing to today’s players. Nightdive previously worked similar magic with the Enhanced Edition of the original System Shock, transforming it into what many now consider the definitive way to enjoy the 1994 classic.
Over the years, System Shock 2 has benefited greatly from a dedicated community that has created patches, high-resolution textures, and various fixes. While these mods collectively offer a fantastic version of the game, they often make it tricky for newcomers to jump in smoothly. The 25th Anniversary Edition addresses this by integrating a host of these community-driven improvements and optimizing elements that have remained unchanged since the game’s original release in 1999. As one of my all-time favorite games, I’m thrilled to see a whole new audience ready to embark on the Von Braun’s maiden voyage come June.
