There’s quite the buzz in gaming circles as whispers suggest that Square Enix might be gearing up for a big release on the Nintendo Switch 2. The rumors are swirling around the possibility of both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth making their way to this anticipated console. So far, not many titles have been officially unveiled for the Switch 2, but with its launch just around the corner, it’s likely that we’ll start hearing more game announcements very soon.
Nintendo has officially scheduled a Switch 2 Direct event for Wednesday, April 2. This presentation is expected to lay out the release date, pricing, and launch titles for the console. Following this, it’s plausible that third-party developers, including the likes of Square Enix, will begin unveiling their Switch 2 offerings.
Currently, Square Enix hasn’t publicly announced any games for the Switch 2. However, a recent leak points towards the company potentially planning to launch both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth on the new console. The source of this leak, NateDrake, also known as Nate the Hate, has a track record for reliable Switch 2 news. According to NateDrake’s insights shared on Resetera, Square Enix appears to be heavily focusing on Final Fantasy 7 titles for the Switch 2, while Final Fantasy 16 might not be coming to the platform just yet.
Focusing on FF7 makes sense, especially considering that FF16 didn’t perform as well in sales as anticipated. By channeling efforts into the beloved Final Fantasy 7, Square Enix could potentially secure a stronger start on the new console. Final Fantasy 7’s enduring popularity is a solid reason for the company to prioritize these remakes for the Switch 2. If these games are indeed heading to the Switch 2, it might hint at the console boasting more power than expected. Yet, there may also be necessary compromises to ensure they run smoothly on Nintendo’s latest hybrid system. Fans will need to wait and see how these games perform on the Switch 2, which might not happen quite yet.
As of now, only a few indie games have been confirmed for the Switch 2. The only major announcement from Nintendo has been a new Mario Kart game. But the April 2 Direct event is likely to bring a slew of additional titles into the spotlight, much to fans’ anticipation.
