Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios stirred excitement in the gaming community by announcing that Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic is set to launch on PS5 and PC on June 13th. However, the sudden absence of any mention of PSVR 2 support in their marketing materials after previously showcasing a demo on that platform has raised some questions.
At PAX West 2024, the game was initially introduced through a playable PSVR 2 demo, positioning Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic as a unique blend of VR and traditional gameplay from the innovative minds at Steel Wool Studios.
Since its creation in 2012, Steel Wool Studios, backed by an early $5 million investment from HTC, has been a pioneer in VR gaming. They’ve brought VR fans titles like Hello Neighbor Search and Rescue in 2023, the original FNAF: Help Wanted in 2019, and its sequel in 2024.
With the release date now out in the open, the conspicuous removal of PSVR 2 mentions from marketing materials, including changes made to the game’s PlayStation Store page, is notable. Previously, the page indicated an option for PSVR 2 support, a detail captured in web archives but now conspicuously absent.
The only reference to PSVR 2 came in the form of an official PlayStation post when the release date was announced on February 12th, but that too has been removed. As of now, Steel Wool Studios hasn’t clarified whether PSVR 2 support is on the horizon, nor have they confirmed if the PC versions on the Epic Games Store and Steam will feature optional VR capabilities.
We’ve reached out to Steel Wool Studios for clarification, but as of yet, there’s been no response. We’ll be sure to update when we hear back, whether it involves a delay in VR mode or another strategic decision.
