Valve isn’t rolling out a brand-new successor to the Steam Deck just yet. Instead, they’re treating us to a fresh take on their popular gaming handheld. Coming soon is the Steam Deck OLED, spruced up in a chic white limited edition.
This special edition is named the “Steam Deck OLED: Limited Edition White.” It packs the same punch as the usual 1TB model, but with a $679 price tag, it’s going to cost you $30 more. Mark your calendars, as it’s set to hit the shelves on Monday, November 18.
This stunning device doesn’t just flaunt a sleek white and gray design, but also comes with a matching white carry case and a microfiber cloth to keep it spotless. Valve is no stranger to experimenting with colors. They previously launched a limited edition with a smoky translucent shell that flew off the shelves – though it developed some minor cracks. This time, the white Deck will be available wherever the Steam Deck is sold, spanning across the U.S., Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea, thanks to their partner Komodo. Supply will be divvied up fairly across these regions.
To combat scalping, Valve is restricting purchases to one per account. Plus, your Steam account must’ve been active with at least one purchase before November 2024 to qualify.
In a press release, Valve shared their hopes that this OLED model will guide decisions on future color releases. “We’re eager to see the response,” they mentioned, “and we’ll use it as a learning opportunity for future color variants.”
If you’re looking to get that white look without splurging on the limited edition, there are alternatives like backplates or skins from companies such as Jsaux and dbrand. However, if you prefer buying directly from Valve, act fast – the stock won’t last.
Looking ahead, Valve has hinted at exciting prospects for the Steam Deck, including new color choices and continuous software improvements. They’re teasing “ongoing work toward the future of Steam Deck and other hardware ventures.”
The photos suggest a nostalgic mix between a Wii U and an iPod, which intrigues me. It makes me wonder if the new color scheme will tempt current owners to upgrade their systems.
