Exciting news is on the horizon for users of Copilot+ PCs as they are set to receive an update that addresses one of the weaker aspects of Windows 11. Microsoft’s latest Insider build introduces enhanced Windows Search. This upgrade, which harnesses AI and specialized hardware, promises to simplify the process of locating documents, photos, and settings more efficiently.
For now, this improved Windows Search is limited to Copilot+ PCs equipped with Snapdragon processors. However, Microsoft assures users of AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs that they’ll have the opportunity to test this feature soon.
It’s unfortunate that this enhancement is initially exclusive to Snapdragon-powered PCs, especially considering some of the top-performing Copilot+ devices are built with Intel or AMD processors.
Microsoft first revealed their plans for a better Windows Search back in October. The new feature allows users to employ descriptive language within the Windows Search pane, making it easier to find content or modify settings.
This improvement takes advantage of the NPUs in Copilot+ PCs. With at least 40 TOPS, these processors are well-equipped to handle AI-intensive tasks.
Copilot+ PCs made their debut last June, but they’ve yet to showcase a must-have feature unique to the Copilot+ branding. Our Senior Editor, Zac Bowden, even described the initial launch as a "total disaster."
This rocky start stemmed from several issues, notably the absence of standout features that could captivate users.
There’s hope that the exclusive release of features like improved Windows Search will entice more users. Many have criticized Windows Search for its deficiencies, and enhancing it with AI might alleviate some of the frustration associated with its use.
According to the changelog for the latest build, AI enhancements will refine the process of searching for content via Windows Search and File Explorer.
Windows 11 Build 26100.3624: New Features & Improvements
Improved Windows Search: The introduction makes finding documents, photos, and settings across Windows 11 straightforward for Copilot+ PC users. Leveraging semantic indexing alongside traditional lexical methods, this feature is a game-changer for searches conducted via File Explorer, the taskbar, or Settings. Forgetting file names or exact content is now less of an issue. Phrases like “change my theme” work seamlessly in the Settings app, and thanks to the NPU’s 40+ TOPS within Copilot+ PCs, these improvements even function offline. Currently available on Snapdragon-powered devices, support for AMD and Intel models is on the way.
Simplified Photo Search: Discovering images, whether stored locally or in the cloud, has been simplified for Copilot+ PCs. Users can type keywords like “summer picnics” in File Explorer’s search box to see instant results from both local and cloud-stored images. This feature works great with your personal OneDrive, allowing you to find exact keyword matches within your cloud files when online. The feature currently supports Snapdragon-powered PCs, with AMD and Intel compatibility arriving soon.
When Will Improved Windows Search Be Available?
At present, the improved Windows Search is undergoing testing with Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel, but only on Copilot+ PCs with Qualcomm chips. Although there’s no solid timetable, it’s encouraging that testing is underway.
Microsoft’s announcement in November last year suggested that improved Windows Search would be accessible through the Windows Insider Program by early 2025. It didn’t, however, set a completion date for general release.
Typically, features in the Release Preview Channel reach general availability within 4-6 weeks, but this isn’t a fixed schedule. While a definitive launch date isn’t confirmed, the enhanced Windows Search feature is expected soon.
Looking ahead, Microsoft is set to host a consumer-focused AI event on April 4, 2025, marking its 50th-anniversary celebration. This event would be an ideal platform to unveil new AI-driven features like the improved Windows Search.
